“The AI slop of it all creates so much distrust, and they see that the brands that are winning right now are the ones that are most authentic and human and relatable,” a CEO told the Wall Street Journal.

Compliance technology firm Vanta this month began hiring for a head of storytelling, offering a salary of up to $274,000, according to a WSJ story. It also mentioned that military financial-services company USAA is hunting for its fourth staff storyteller, less than a year since it hired its first. The National Wild Turkey Federation’s Midwest chapter is looking for its third.

I thought AI was going to do all of that? That’s what I kept reading in too many articles to link to.

I’m filing this stat under the death of human intelligence is is greatly exaggerated. That doesn’t mean that I am not for some low level of AI assistance – you could say spell check is an elementary version of AI – but I think we like our communication to come from well informed and thoughtful humans who know how to put a sentence together when we can get it.

That is why a content strategy is as important as a business strategy. Telling AI to dream up a bunch of stories for your brand might introduce some hallucinations you can’t afford.
