Upcoming college graduates have at least one easy decision to make as they enter the final weeks of school.
Do not turn on the Open to Work Badge on LinkedIn.
Since offering career counseling, I have met a number of people who have had the badge turned on for some time. None came to me with a job offer since turning the badge on.
My recommendation has been to turn it off and focus on what you have 100% control over: How your resume looks and reads, a cover letter that tells a story in parallel to the respective job description, and a LinkedIn account that is organized and clear with recommendations turned on and full of great people hyping you up.
For me, the badge says “I am willing to take any job.” While that might be your attitude, you are leaning on a hiring manager to bail you out. Instead, get those three assets in line and then look for the right fit, even if it’s not ideal.
While it might not be your dream job, you sometimes have to get a job so you can look for the next one. But don’t take something that will set you back mentally. Spending a minute in a job that you hate isn’t worth it. It’s more important to find something that fits for now while you continue your search.
