This job market is unlike any other.
But the good news is that you have a shot. There are a lot of jobs open in the country and all over the country. In person and remote.
You just have to be more human than before. And the work has to meet a standard. It’s not a secret what employers in journalism or any other profession are looking for today. The job descriptions can’t be clearer.
After my chat today to the Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association conference at Oklahoma State University, one of the students told me that he wasn’t too proud to beg for a job.
I told him let the work do the work.
In journalism, like most professions, the portfolio of work + the true recommendations of others + your likeability + your work ethic = getting that interview. You have to work on the story to leave them with. What can you say, and what can you show them, that allows them to tell a favorable story about you to others?
Attached is the handout I gave at this talk if you know someone looking for guidance on how to get everything together in preparation for a job hunt, including a template of what a resume needs to look like in today’s market.
