We are now four months into being able to check “Your Algorithm,” a new Instagram feature to control the topics that come up on your Reels feed.
Now we are a month into an enhancement on that feature, which extended this control to your Explore screen (when you push on the search icon).
This all reminds me of when I used to log into my daughter’s YouTube account and select videos on inspirational female leadership and critical thinking to get them to show up in her feed of recommendations.
When I checked my algorithm, based on my activity, it reflected where I was in the last 30 days. I was interested in the NFL Draft for fantasy football reasons. I was looking into business ownership because I might buy something. I liked that positivity came up because I am trying to be more positive. I have done some research into parenting because it’s an art and a science. Looks like all those memes sent to my wife on marriage humor were being recorded. Mindset and good morning also made the list, which is something I’m trying to hack so I can share my findings at a workshop later this month on time management.
How to see Your Algorithm instructions
- Open Instagram and go to the Reels tab at the bottom.
- Look for the icon in the top right that shows two lines with hearts.
- Tap it to open Your Algorithm.
- You’ll see the topics you’ve been consuming.
- Add or remove interests to change what shows up in your Reels.
What the therapists will tell you often:
Take control of what you can actually control. Try it and see what happens.
